I’ve been reading a book by John Edgar Wideman called “The Homewood Books.” It’s a collection of stories about Homewood, a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It’s some of the best writing I’ve encountered in years, because Wideman is somehow able to integrate the awareness of the past into the experience of the present – each sentence compact enough to hold in your hand, but dense enough that it will break your bones if you try to lift it.
